March 22nd marks World Water Day, which serves to spread knowledge on the importance of clean water around the world, and how humans can strive to maintain and preserve this precious resource for generations to come by conserving water.
Why is World Water Day Important?
Sources of plentiful and healthy freshwater are becoming scarce, as humankind is using – and wasting – more water than ever. This steady increase of water usage is due in part to increased urbanization, and the changes in lifestyle that follow this change in living conditions.
Within the next fifty years, human population is estimated to grow by 40 to 50%, and with the increase in population, there will be an increase in water usage. Currently, the water crisis can be contributed to many human-produced issues, such as:
The Agricultural Crisis: Reliance on water-reliant crops, such as rice, corn, and cotton, along with the vast production of factory-farmed meat means that agriculture and food production is using up a considerable amount of water. Scientists and activists alike are attempting to spread the message on the importance of cultivating water-efficient crops, and lowering human dependence on factory-farmed meats.
Environmental Crisis: The loss and pollution of freshwater sources have a profound impact on these aquatic environments. When these ecosystems are disturbed, the natural balances that keep an environment healthy cannot be regulated efficiently.
How to Conserve Water at Home
There are many ways to save water throughout the day without making any major lifestyle changes. Try adding the following habits into daily routines, and be amazed when your next water bill comes along:
Take showers instead of baths. A five-minute shower uses around 15-25 gallons of water in ten minutes, while a bathtub requires roughly 37 gallons of water to be filled
Turn off taps when brushing teeth. When the tap is left running, an average of 5 gallons of water is wasted
Repair leaky faucets around your home
Use a bucket to wash vehicles, rather than a hose
Don’t water the lawn until completely necessary, and use a garden hose nozzle to disrupt the flow of water when not in use
In recent years, there have been major developments in water-efficient technology for plumbing systems. These technologies were created and designed to conserve water from the source: faucets and pipes. Some of these plumbing technologies include:
Automatic, timed faucets
Garden hose nozzles
Faucet aerators, which work to break up water flow into small particles to effectively wet items like a normal faucet, but use less water
Low-flow (energy efficient) showerheads
Dual-flush toilets
